VPO Pet Resources™ — Breed Guide

Ragdoll Cat

Ragdolls follow their families from room to room, tolerate handling well and are happiest as indoor companions.

Temperament

Calm, affectionate and notably tolerant. Many Ragdolls go limp when lifted, greet people at the door and prefer company to solitude. They are not typically demanding or vocal.

Grooming

The semi-long coat has little undercoat, so it mats less than it looks like it would — but it still needs combing two or three times a week, especially around the britches and belly. Trim nails and provide good scratching options.

Indoor lifestyle

Trusting and slow to flee, which makes free-roaming outdoors risky. Give them vertical space, window perches, a secure catio or supervised harness time instead.

General care

Ragdolls mature slowly and grow large, so feed for steady rather than rapid growth. Ask about screening for the inherited heart condition HCM, and keep annual dental and weight checks.

Family suitability

Well suited to families with gentle children, to apartment life and to homes with another calm pet. Teach children to support the whole body when lifting.

Everyday enrichment

Short play sessions with wand toys, puzzle feeders and a quiet high resting spot keep an indoor Ragdoll content.
