VPO Pet Resources™ — Breed Guide
French Bulldog
French Bulldogs are affectionate housemates who want to be wherever you are. They ask for very little exercise and a good deal of attention.
Temperament
Playful, people-focused and famously stubborn in a charming way. Frenchies bond hard with their household, dislike being left alone for long stretches and usually get along well with visitors and other pets when introduced calmly.
Exercise needs
Two short daily walks and some indoor play are plenty. Because of their short muzzle they overheat quickly, so walk early or late in warm weather, keep sessions brief and never push a Frenchie to keep running once breathing sounds laboured.
Grooming
The short coat needs only a weekly brush, but the folds around the face and tail should be wiped and dried regularly. Check ears and trim nails monthly.
Common considerations
Flat-faced breeds are prone to breathing difficulty, heat sensitivity, skin-fold irritation and spinal issues. Ask any breeder or rescue for health history, avoid air travel in cargo, and keep weight in a lean range — extra kilos make breathing noticeably harder.
Family suitability
A strong fit for apartments, first-time owners and quieter households. Supervise play with small children — Frenchies are sturdy but not built for rough handling.
General care
Cool indoor space, a harness rather than a neck collar, a measured diet and an annual veterinary check cover most of what this breed needs.
